Song And Laughter was a late withdrawal, on veterinary advice, at 1.30pm when it was found to be lame in the near foreleg. Stewards subsequently ordered that all monies placed on Song And Laughter be refunded in full and with regards to betting with bookmakers all successful wagers made prior to 1.03pm to be subject to the following deductions in the dollar on the face value of the ticket:
1st) Zin Zan Eddie less 10 cents win, 14 cents place
2nd) Diamond Drille less 12 cents place
A further veterinary examination of Song And Laughter on return to the stable area confirmed the original finding. Trainer Mr K Moses was advised he must produce a veterinary clearance prior to Song And Laughter’s next race start.
App. S Clipperton, rider of California Storm, pleaded guilty of a charge of careless riding in that he permitted his mount to shifted out rounding the home turn and, in so doing, made contact with Mickelberg, taking Mickelberg out onto Appearance, which in turn was taken out onto She’s Clean, resulting in Mickelberg, Appearance and She’s Clean all being badly hampered. App. Clipperton’s permit to ride was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 3 March 2013 and to expire on Sunday, 10 March 2010, on which day he may ride. In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account that California Storm blundered making the home turn and, after making contact with Mickelberg, California Storm had overreacted and exacerbated the interference to horses to its outside.
An inquiry was opened into the riding tactics adopted on Hardbreak Hotel (N Berry) and Falklands (App. J Duggan). N Berry, stated that, from his better draw today, he was instructed to be handier, but Hardbreak Hotel jumped into the lead and, with the blinkers ontoday, was inclined to overrace. He added, even though he knew the pace set was too fast, he was unable to get Hardbreak Hotel to come back underneath him, particularly in the middle stages, when Falklands came up to his outside and placed pressure on his mount. As a result, Hardbreak Hotel was a beaten horse on the home turn and, after slipping on the home turn, N Berry stated that he did not continue to ride his mount out. Trainer Mr G Walter confirmed the instructions, confirmed his satisfaction with the ride of N Berry and indicated Hardbreak Hotel would now be spelled. A post-race veterinary examination of Hardbreak Hotel did not reveal any abnormalities. App. J Duggan, rider of Falklands, advised that her instructions were to be forward and she was to attempt, if the opportunity presented, to endeavour to obtain a break from the 500m. Trainer Mr M Quinn stated that, whilst the instructions were to endeavour to pinch a break from the 500m, that was contingent on the horse having a comfortable lead. Betting Steward Mr T Griffin gave evidence that the tempo for the first 1000m of the 1600m event was 1.5 seconds faster than the average and, when questioned, App. Duggan stated she was not aware that the tempo was as strong as the figures indicated. In particular App. Duggan was questioned as to why she placed Falklands under pressure from the 800m after the race had been run at such a strong tempo. The inquiry was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
